Recently, S. Korea proved that they do not tolerate pirate activities against their own people. By the cover of night S.Korean Navy commandos stormed the hijacked ship by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean. The S.Korean officials have reported that the whole crew that was held hostage was freed and all of the Somali pirates were neutralized, some of whom were captured. Only one crew member was wounded during the raid, but he remains in non-life threatening condition.
Some say that this act proves the strong will of the government in times of need. S.Korean government clearly wants to prove to the world that it can takes matters into its own hands and wants to put an end to illegal pirate acts which threaten their people's lives.
Since there is no real government in Somalia pirates roam free. Somali pirates have been hijacking all kids of ships before this incident happened, taking the crew hostage and often demanding a ransom.
Not only S.Korea took an action against the pirates, other countries around the world are starting to join the fight against pirates as well e.g.France and Russia.
Will this pirate activity ever stop? Are the actions taken by countries like S.Korea right and will they ever work to stop the pirates?
From a media perspective, do you really believe all of the information S.Korea released about the raid is true and contains all the pieces? S.Korea clearly depends on its image and they surely wouldn't like to see that destroyed by the media.
Who will you trust in our media soaked world? How can you separate the truth from a distortion? This Blog is designed to discuss these issues we face each day as our minds absorb and filter out the necessary information from the media. Don't be afraid to speak your mind!
